Shifting Away From Ice Breakers: Returning to Classrooms Prioritizing Community Building, Joy, and Vulnerability

The opportunity to connect as members of school and classroom communities has become more imperative than ever. After so much isolation from one another, the classroom is a space where we as educators must connect with our students beyond academics. This is a time to make space for vulnerability and shared experience. These allow our students to see the humanity in one another and build stronger community in the classroom, our schools, and ultimately our society. In this session we will talk about how, unlike "ice breakers", community builders allow for a deeper sense of connection and make space for the authenticity of each child while honoring all perspectives. How do we ask the right introductory questions? How can we start school in more meaningful, thoughtful, and impactful ways? Can allowing room for each child's identity help connect them further with the curriculum? We will explore these ideas as a way to plan for stronger human connections in the classroom, in addition to discussing the importance of setting group norms prior and making time to debrief after. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of community building activities with students, and a chance to think about their application in their own K-12 classrooms.

Facilitators: Brandi Forte, Sophie Rutstein
