Shubha Sarode (pronounced: shuh-buh suh-ro-they) is entering her
15 th year in STEM education. She began her career as a science
teacher in NYC. She then transitioned as an instructional coach for the
Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program at the University of
Pennsylvania. Here, she played a dual role; in the coaching side she
visited various schools in the School District of Philadelphia working
closely with mentors to support the apprentices in a teams-based
approach. In the instructional side, she served as an adjunct
professor, where she redesigned the science curriculum to support
practice-based teaching while integrating culturally relevant pedagogy
with the Next Generation Science Standards. Her most recent role
was a STEM PD and Curriculum Manager at the Philadelphia
Education Fund, where she supported the design, delivery and
execution of programming from various grants to support science
teachers and STEM afterschool educators.
Currently, she is working as an independent consultant which provides
her the privilege to spend more time with her baby son! She joins
Roots ConnectED in order to continue living her lifelong mission,
which is to support excellent science instruction. Her definition of
excellence means that education is anti biased, which is articulated in
the Roots ConnectED framework. Instruction should be grounded in
community, be inclusive and support social action. She continues to
learn and grow with Roots ConnectED and believes that classrooms
can be spaces to build connections across differences by centering
the humanity in each other.
Shubha holds her B.A in Biological Sciences from Rutgers University.
She holds an M.A in Science Education from Teachers College,
Columbia University and an M.A in Educational Leadership and Policy
from the University of Michigan.
