Beyond Just The Books in My Home Library : Reading with My Kids with a Critical Lens

We have seen a lot of lists circulate with wonderful books for the home library, ones with increased representation.  However, how are we reading those books with our kids?  How are we reading the books that don’t represent different racial identities?  One of the things we think is critical is the way in which we push our children to ask questions, and look for bias, omission, and stereotypes in the books we read.  ‘Critical literacy’ is a term often used by educators trained to support children to read and think critically about the world around them.  In this workshop, the presenters will share tools and strategies for how to read books with your child in a way that allows them the space to consider power, positionality, and perspective taking. Using books as a tool for doing this allows us to raise a generation of children who search for truth and listen to stories of the untold.

* Talking About Race and Racism with Your Child is the Prerequisite for this Workshop. Upon completing prerequisite workshop, a code will be given to participants that will unlock the ticket to this event (Sign up for prerequisite Workshop: here).
