Allison Kao
Allison Kao has taught in New York City public schools since 2006. She began as a high school science teacher and later moved to teach elementary science and Kindergarten at Community Roots Charter School, a Roots ConnectED learning site. Allison helped found and develop the science program starting from the second grade. Teaching all grade levels allowed her to gain a deep understanding of children at all ages and developmental stages. As a Kindergarten teacher, Allison piloted and grew the Kindergarten outdoor education program, supporting students to build an authentic community, learn from each other and the world around them, and understand that their voices matter. She continually aims to instill a passion for learning and a need to deepen the understanding for underrepresented and marginalized communities. She joins Roots ConnectED because she believes that having open, honest conversations starting from early childhood helps to build trust, empathy, and meaningful connections, which are essential for an inclusive classroom. Allison holds a Bachelors of Arts from Wellesley College in both Psychology and Biological Sciences, as well as a Masters of Science from Pace University.
